How College GPA Is Calculated
Your college GPA is calculated using credit hours and the standard 4.0 grading scale. Here's everything you need to know.
The GPA Formula
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)
Example: An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12.0 quality points. A B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course = 13.2. Total: 25.2 ÷ 7 = 3.60 GPA.
Dean's List & Honors
- Dean's List: Typically 3.5+ semester GPA
- Cum Laude: 3.5+ cumulative GPA
- Magna Cum Laude: 3.7+ cumulative GPA
- Summa Cum Laude: 3.9+ cumulative GPA
Academic Probation
Most colleges place students on academic probation when their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0. You'll typically get one semester to improve. If your GPA remains below 2.0, you may face suspension or dismissal.
Credit Hours Explained
Most college courses are 3 credits. Labs are often 1 credit. Some intensive courses may be 4–5 credits. A full-time semester load is typically 12–18 credits. Credit hours determine how much each grade affects your overall GPA.
